Voice Modems and Audio Setup Wizard

Problem

Voice Modems with audio features are included with many systems today. Due to that fact, the Voice Modem will also be listed as an "Audio Device" on your system. When you run the Audio Setup Wizard in Dragon NaturallySpeaking Personal Edition 1.0 or DragonDictate for Windows 3.0, you might get an error message saying that "Two soundcards are detected" or "Another device is using the audio hardware" during the microphone test.

Resolution

Here's how to fix that error:

1) Go to Control Panel, Multimedia, Advanced, Audio Devices.

2) Highlight the Voice Modem device, for example "Audio for US Robotic Sportster Voice Serial Wave Device" (or equivalent), and click on the Properties button.

3) Select "Do Not Use Audio Features........" and "Do Not Map Through this Device". Restart your system.

Once the system has restarted,

4) Go to Control Panel, Multimedia.

5) Make sure that "Preferred device" lists the soundcard driver you wish to use for both Playback and Recording.

6) Select "Use preferred devices only". Click Ok.

7) Go to Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, Multimedia, Volume Controls.

8) Click on the Options menu and select "Properties".

9) Select "Recording" and make sure that all "Controls" listed below are selected. Click OK.

10) In Recording Control, make sure that ONLY "Microphone" is selected for sound input and that the volume is up. Minimize (or Close) the Recording Control window and run the Audio Setup Wizard again.

The procedure above does not affect your normal modem operations in any way.
