Ensoniq Audio PCI (32-bit) soundcard and Audio Setup Wizard

Problem

When you run the Audio Setup Wizard in Dragon NaturallySpeaking Personal Edition 1.0 or DragonDictate for Windows 3.0, using the certified Ensoniq Audio PCI soundcard, you might initially receive a message saying "No Sound Was Detected" during the microphone test. Here's how to fix that "problem":

Resolution

First, you need to make sure that your card is properly configured:

1) Go to Control Panel and double click on the "System" icon (or right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties").

2) Go to the tab/folder called "Device Manager".

3) In Device Manager, go to "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers", select the driver for the Ensoniq Audio PCI and then click the "Properties" button below.

4) In the Properties window, go to the "Settings" tab.

5) Click to change the configuration. One of the options you should see is "Microphone Bias" settings.

6) Turn Microphone Bias "On". This will enable "Bias Voltage" (or "Phantom Power") which is required for the NaturallySpeaking microphone to work

7) Then, go to the Ensoniq Audio PCI Mixer (not the Windows default mixer) usually located on the Taskbar in the corner next to the "Clock". Double click on the icon which looks like a small, gray volume slider.

8) Inside the mixer, make sure that under the "Microphone Balance" heading, "Boost" is checked. "Mute" and "Monitor" should not be checked (Default are: Boost = Off, Mic = Mute and Monitor = On).

9) In the "Recording Balance" section, make sure the "Microphone" is the only device checked.

10) Here comes the "important" part:

After you have completed the test, there's no need to repeat any of these procedures. Step #10 is only necessary when you wish to run the Audio Setup Wizard again. This will be fixed in the next release of the Audio Setup Wizard.
